Nothing is better than replacing an outdated inkjet printer with a wireless laser model. The Samsung ML-2525W hits the sub-£100 cost with a clever, small style that works effectively in any home or small place of work.
The mono wireless laser ML-2525W prints via USB 2., wired Ethernet and wireless 802.11b/g. It's also compatible with almost all operating systems: Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2003 Server, 2008 Server and 7; Mac OS X 10.3-10.6; and Linux.
It will not scan or copy, nevertheless this means it won't take up a lot of space. The machine, which is able to rest comfortably on any handy small area, is more or less 14 x 15 x 8 inches in size and weighs in at around 17 lbs. The body incorporates a robust, durable feel and comes in a common black matte finish.
The top panel features two buttons - one for power and one other you press and hold to print configuration reports. The print tray is internal, and this shields paper from airborne dirt and dust build-up. The front panel opens for immediate access to paper jams and simple toner installation.
The model doesn't support auto duplex printing, nevertheless, you can feed sheets by hand through an input slot on the front of the device if you'd like double-sided prints. The input slot likewise lets you print on various sizes and types of media, for example postcards and envelopes.
A couple of great things about shifting from an inkjet printer to laser printer are speed and also sound - and the ML-2525W does not disappoint. It requires approximately 9 seconds for the number one page to print from standby mode, as Samsung's technical specs state, and printing speed is a comfy 24 pages-per-minute at a hushed 50 dBA.
The print tray total capacity is 250 sheets, and that is half a standard 500-sheet packet of 8.5 x 11-inch paper. Printed pages come out at the top of the equipment, as opposed to a pull-out tray, and pause whenever you get to the output capability of 80 sheets.
Another advantage of laser, when compared with inkjet, is more affordable upkeep. Cartridges last longer, therefore if you print frequently, it will decrease how often you get stuck during a print job. For those who print hardly ever, working with toner also will mean you won't have to worry about your cartridges drying up.
The Samsung ML2525 toner cartridges come in two sizes: the MLT-D105L cartridge that prints approximately 2,500 pages, whilst the low yield ML-D105S cartridge prints approximately 1,500 pages.
The downside, if switching from a colour inkjet to the black-and-white ML-2525W model, is shedding the chance to print in colour. In case you print loads of text and find nearly all your colour printing happens whenever your black ink cartridge runs out, the loss shall be negligible.
The benefits of wireless printing can't be over-stated. You not only shed the visual muddle of cords, but gain the convenience to print from as many printers as you would like from any site in your network. Nevertheless the greatest obstacle, for wireless printers generally, is still the setup process.
While costs for wireless and laser printing is falling, presently there aren't a great deal of models on the market that will contain both. The ML-2525W's principal competitor is the HL-2107W, a wireless laser mono printer from Brother that has about those same specifications for a comparable cost.
Major variations between the Samsung and Brother models are memory (the ML-2525W has 64MB, the HL-2107W has 32MB), print quality (the ML-2525W prints at 1200 x 1200 dpi, the HL-2107W prints at 2400 x 600 dpi) and also design (the ML-2525W is available in black, whilst the HL-2107W is a couple of shades of gray).
Samsung on its own provides a couple of other monochrome wireless laser types. The ML-1630W is exceedingly compact and has a piano black finish. The SCX-4500W is a multi-functional printer/scanner/copier model that has a matching sleek style and finish.
A couple of colour laser wireless models are likewise available from Samsung: the CLP-315W and CLX-3175FW.
In general, the ML-2525W provides excellent printing speed, quality and performance for its cost. The machine looks great as well, with a clean, streamlined structure that is simple and efficient. The wireless set up may be enhanced with improved technical help as well as trouble shooting suggestions for the many operating systems supported, nevertheless the advantages of wireless printing will more than likely outrank any kind of nuisance you may well come across during the setup.
