Samsung CLX-6210FX Review

The Samsung CLX-6210FX colour laser multifunction printer offers regular options at an affordable price. It provides acceptable speed, but suffers from print quality issues, including inaccurate colours and inconsistent monochrome results.

The CLX-6219FX is pretty big, measuring 645.2mm. Even with such size, the total input capability remains only 350 sheets which is fed via a 250-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. A second 250-page cassette can be added. The output tray will handle a maximum of 170 sheets at a time.

USB, Ethernet and RJ-11 fax connections are all situated on the side of the CLX-6210FX. Printing or scanning from USB flash drives can be carried out from a USB.2 port on the front of the device.

Out of the box, the Samsung CLX-6210FX has 128mb of memory, but this is user-upgradeable to a maximum of 384mb. The printer's other optional extra, an 80GB internal hard drive, enables a Stored Jobs feature which lets you save files to the printer.

The machines control panel is rather confusing to use with all its speed dial buttons as well as the numeric keypad. There are also quite a few buttons to configure duplex and numerous copy settings. It could have been a lot better to access these features with a menu on the 2-line monochrome LCD screen rather than the extra buttons on the panel.. You are likely to adapt to the panel's format, but it could be simplified.

You will need to install the four Samsung CLX-6210FX printer toner cartridges before using the machine. Before you can start printing, the Samsung CLX-6210FX needs to warm up, and this can take a frustratingly long time. Although once warmed up, the print speeds are pretty good. In 'ready' mode, and regardless of the quality setting, the unit takes 28.5 seconds to print the first page of a colour or monochrome document, with subsequent pages printing at a consistent 20 pages per minute.

The result of the mono text document prints were accurate and readable but a bit under-saturated. The Samsung CLX-6210FX's "Print All Text to Darken" feature attempts to resolve this, but instead it produced inconsistently bolded characters that often ruin documents. Luckily, this feature can easily be disabled.

Although the Samsung CLX-6210FX colour laser multifunction automatically alters colour registration between printing tasks, we still noticed alignment issues in our colour documents. We did manage to fix this issue, however, by enabling the multifunction's Colour Smart "Fine Grain" feature. The result was much reduced problems with alignment. But, despite having this issue resolved, colour from the Samsung CLX-6210FX is basically oversaturated and inconsistent. The colour quality will suffice for smaller graphics, however large blocks of the same colour will suffer.

Scanning can be done directly from the Samsung CLX-6210FX colour laser multifunction, and results can be sent to local and networked PCs.

The Samsung CLX-6210 colour laser multifunction's price and features are alluring, and its operating costs are not to shabby either. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to use and lacks the print quality we want from a laser printer, even at this price.
