Samsung CLP-670ND Review

Samsung’s CLP-670ND is aimed at the average workgroup of perhaps 5-10 office workers.

It is a large block of a device, with dark grey sides, back and control panel as well as light grey front and top.

The control panel is simultaneously eye-catching as well as minimalist, using basic buttons for power as well as to cancel a project, and a four-way ring for menu navigation along with an OK button in the middle as well as a surrounding blue ring for effect. The 2-line by 16-character LCD display has no backlight, but is totally legible in typical overhead lighting.

A 250-sheet paper tray slips out from the bottom of the front panel and another optional tray of the same volume can be fitted below the device. Additionally, an inset in the front panel folds down to become a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray in a novel set up, where the guides on the lid slot in position as it swings down, whilst a front panel slot flicks open to provide access.

The front panel also folds down to reveal a transfer belt affixed to its rear which contacts four combined drum and toner cartridges in the CMYK colours, which are stacked up inside. They slide in to place by using grips at either end and are extremely swift and straightforward to fit.

Samsung rates the machine at 24ppm both in black and colour print which isn't really unduly optimistic. Although five-page black text print returned a relatively slow 9.6ppm and even the five-page black text and colour graphics piece of work only raised this to 12.4ppm, the 20-page black text experiment resulted in 18.1ppm - approximately two thirds of the claimed pace.

The laser printer possesses a duplexer built-in and when we ran the 20-page document as a 10-page duplex examination, it completed in 2mins 8secs, giving a speed of 9.5 sides per minute.

Black text is correctly formed, as is the case with most modern day laser printers, and it is perfectly acceptable for day-to-day documents. It's greater than the output from any kind of inkjet and easily matches that from most mono laser printers.

This is a machine aimed at business documents, therefore colour output is aimed at graphics as opposed to photographs. It does fairly well at this, reproducing vivid and vivacious colours perfect for graphs and also charts. These are remarkably smooth in their application, too, with very few signs of patchiness or banding. There is also very little haloing plus black text over colour looks nice and clean as well as accurately situated.

Even photo output is acceptable for a colour laser machine and at the top resolution, an enhanced 9,600 x 600dpi, the results are superior to most. While some fine detail is lost in sections of strong shadow, colour variants are even and relatively natural.

The drum and toner cartridges are available in standard yields of 2,000 pages for colour and 2,500 for black and in high yields of 4,000 pages and 5,000 pages, respectively.

This is a decent, sturdy colour laser machine that has cost-saving duplex print as standard, a fair turn of speed and also above-average print quality. Print costs are in the midsection of the sector, becoming somewhat better whenever printing colour, and it features the look and feel of a machine which will just sit there and do its work.
