You do not get amazingly rapid laser speeds with the CLP-310, however it surely does meet the buildup on offering inexpensive colour laser printing in a compact form factor.
Samsung works with talented individuals who are exceptionally imaginative with CAD, pencils, rulers and the tensile strengths of plastic and metal materials to create some exceptionally nice looking electronic products, from television sets to cell phones and a great deal more.
And then there's the CLP-310.
It's a colour laser printer that looks just like the early mockups for a person's colour laser printer may perhaps look like, just a little bit smaller. It may seem like idle complaining, but then Samsung is the company behind the success of the really appealing ML-1630 Laser Printer. Most probably those design people have got over them, and what we now get is grey and definitely dull.
This may seem like an odd feature to start with, yet Samsung lists the compact size of the CLP-310 as the selling point, and who are we to disagree?
At 388 x 313 x 243mm it's without doubt on the smaller section for a colour laser, however the claim that it is small enough to fit in "easily on any corner of your home or office" is probably a little optimistic. Unless you have very huge bookshelves, presumably.
If there is a feature that most people look for on a laser printer, it's speed. It's curious, then, that Samsung only rates the CLP-310 at a relatively slow 16ppm for the black prints and 4pmm for colour. It is quite possibly far more truthful as compared to the other manufacturers - particularly inkjet vendors, which appear to rate the ppm count at around the rate the printer could spit out blank paper - although it is also not a ringing endorsement in what is intended to be one of laser's main selling points.
The CLP-310 connects through a USB 2. only - there is no built-in network port, however a tab of plastic on the backside points to the likelihood of this particular framework to make room for one - and it's only a printer. Those people who are searching for a multifunction device must look somewhere else.
The initial setup phase of the CLP-310 seemed to be well easy and efficient, down to the straightforward installation of the Samsung CLP310 printer toner cartridges. The CLP 310 toner cartridges are quite small with the black cartridge (CLT-K4092S) just having a capacity of 1500 page capacity while the 3 colour cartridges fairing a lot worse with a 1000 page capacity. The tiny footprint isn't the only small thing on this printer, however if you are moving up from an inkjet printer it may not be such an issue.
A sample text document printing in draft quality took about twenty two seconds to spit out its first page, although additional pages after that came out about every five seconds or so, giving it a real speed rating of just about 9 pages per minute. Print quality in draft mode was incredibly great, however at these speeds, it must be.
Provided with the calm black and white speeds, we were not expecting for the colour pages to fly out of the CLP-310. Samsung claims the CLP-310 can print 4 pages per minute in colour; we managed half of that with a fairly heavy colour coverage page, and similar with photo-style printing - however we would not strictly advise that consumers work with a laser printer like this for dedicated photo work.
About the noise front, the CLP-310 have managed it extremely well well. It's still a long shot from being a really quiet printer, but it is a little bit less noisy as compared to most competing lasers, and its bulky sturdy frame means it absorbs its operating sound in a more robust fashion than the creaky cases that the majority of inkjet engines get placed into.
The CLP-310 is a completely acceptable colour laser with its selling price, and as long as you can wait a little for prints to come out, they're perfectly O.K. as well.
