 Canon i-SENSYS LBP3370 Review

Is there a demand for a mono laser which retails for as much as £339? Canon certainly hopes so, and its Canon i-SENSYS LBP3370 hopes to entice potential buyers away from fancy but less business-oriented colour devices.

That it bears an extremely substantial price will not be automatically evident from the LBP3370's exterior. You will find a mono LCD but otherwise, hardly any indication of sophistication. The housing isn't really notably shiny or in another way suggestive of the price. This isn't actually surprising, because the LBP3370 is actually aimed very much at a workplace surrounding and, consequently, is required to provide little with respect to style.

Just what the LBP3370 ought to offer users is functionality, and here the results are certainly more satisfying. It comes with a 10Base-T/100Base-TX interface and some outstanding management software, permitting it to slide easily into virtually any workplace network. No wireless connection is provided yet, in all honesty, we're even now far from the time when the common company workhorse bothers with the somewhat inconsistent Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards.

PCL5e/6 support and 64MB of RAM are included, while the paper inputs stretch to a 250 sheet cassette plus a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray. The output happens to be a mere 125 pages. These numbers may well not look particularly outstanding, but you can easily upgrade the input capability to 550 sheets using an optionally available tray. We would, however, prefer the output to be a bit greater on a product that actually ought to be ideal for significant print-jobs. In a way however, that may well be missing the aim of the LBP3370.

The LBP3370 was in fact printing inside of six seconds plus, whenever it had been in recent action, it started working practically immediately. It still does not quite reach the figure of 26ppm cited by Canon however at 22.2ppm (pages per minute) it is significantly closer to the on-paper figure than is generally the situation. Plus in a business office environment, where there is a continuous deluge of people looking to run off small print jobs as quickly as possible, the LBP3370's non-existent warm-up time might prove very beneficial.

The ensuing prints using the Canon i-SENSYS LBP3370 printer toner cartridges are dark and well-defined, with the text clearly defined. When compared with cheaper mono lasers the print quality is substantially better. Being a mono design, you're less likely to be purchasing it mostly for the graphics results, although it is pretty good here as well, bringing out the detail even in our group of complex picture trials.

The Canon has a built-in duplex element, which means that you can get it to routinely print to both sides of the paper. The need to suck the paper back within prior to working on the second side obviously increases the time frame (though it fortunately will not cause more paper crinkling), and we found that a typical text task dropped from 22.2ppm to 11.5ppm. However, this is still pretty fast, and definitely will be a very useful means of saving on print costs.

Accordingly, the Canon i-SENSYS LBP3370 possesses some really good features that will help to make it a great addition to a hectic workplace, and it blends solid (but not world-beating) overall performance with crystal clear print quality. The cost, nevertheless, continues to be something of a problem for us. This particular printer is in excess of £300, and you may purchase a decent colour laser for the money. The operating overheads are very good, and wherever there is a need for strong monochrome prints, this'll prove an economical as well as valuable option. However at a period when the price tag of mono products is crumbling, we aren't certain that the LBP3370 is really remarkable enough to warrant that steep price tag.
