The Lexmark Interact S605 high-gloss control panel has just a single button, for you to power the entire system on. Everything else will be taken care of through the touchscreen display or else one of a number of set, lit touch buttons set around it. The primary section of the touchscreen display screen features a bit of an iPhone feel to it, about the same dimensions and with a collection of icons you can flick between and tap to trigger.

The touchscreen is capacitive, and thus reacts well to touches, although the position of the screen can occasionally mean you press the button higher than the one you are after, before you get accustomed to it. The touch controls handle precisely the same kind of functionality as material types, which means you have displays dedicated for copying, scanning and also printing via memory cards, among others.

Other from the touchscreen display, features on the Lexmark S605 are quite much like those in systems further down the range. This isn't a Pro range of devices, therefore it doesn't include a ADF on the top of the scanner, even though it does have a business-like textured top, instead of an annoying high-gloss finish. A sole memory card slot will take SD, Memory Stick as well as xD cards and there is a USB port which in turn handles both PictBridge and USB drives.

Lexmark's new Vizix print system is included on the Lexmark Interact S605, along with its four, discrete ink cartridges and semi-permanent head. Set up went smoothly, even though cartridge installation would gain from a more positive click as soon as each one is pushed in to place.

Lexmark has taken advantage of the S605's touchscreen display to bring in what it dubs SmartSolutions. These include printing-based applets that can be downloaded and kept in the printer itself and thus provide extra functionality, aside from everything that is already installed on the machine.

Lexmark claims 18ppm for black print along with 11ppm for colour in regular print mode, using ISO testing protocols. Our print test results, including the processing time aren't quite as positive. Our own five-page black text print finished in 52 seconds, which in turn is equivalent to 5.77ppm, and yet this went up to 6.90ppm on the 20-page test.

Duplex print, offered as the norm in the Lexmark Interact S605, is fair, because pages never wait for as long when it comes to ink drying in between sides as on, in particular, canon equipment. The 20-side document, like the 20-page simplex test, but printed on the two sides of the paper, delivered a speed of 3.68 sides per minute.

Colour print got a rate of 3.33ppm, thus we're returning to the degree of speed exaggeration which were common a year or so ago. That is not to say that the Interact S605 is slow; actually, the device shows a very competitive rate of speed compared with other inkjet all-in-ones in its price range.

15 x 10cm photograph prints ranged from 43 seconds to 1:07, depending on source and, utilizing lexmark's most recent perfectfinish paper, created photographs which were very nicely balanced, with great pure colours and also substantial levels of fine detail in different lighting levels. Output is much nearer to the top quality attained by Canon and HP than was the case with Lexmark's old printing system.

The Lexmark Interact S605 uses the same CIS scanner with the Interpret as well as Prevail Pro models, and results in much the same plain paper copies. Colours were impressively near to the originals and, everywhere else, text print quality is good, though still not as clear as from the very best presented by a number of its rivals.

The Lexmark S605 ink cartridges are as with the rest of the range, available in a number of formats, the most economical being the 100XL cartridges in return program mode.

This is a good, well featured all-in-one printer, whose touchscreen control offers plenty of promise. When the SmartSolutions collection grows, it might grow to be a valuable expansion to the functions readily available on this and other sorts of Lexmark printers supporting it.
