The Lexmark Pinnacle Pro 901 features a large 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, can scan and print double-sided, uses separate tanks for each of its ink colors, and claims ink costs of only around £5 per 500 pages.

The first demo pages printed looked very impressive for an inkjet on plain paper, without tangible banding and just a little dithering.

Among the great features of the model is its ability to install and operate small applications to further improve its capabilities. You just need to register the model with Lexmark's website, then choose from the selection of applications and transfer them directly to the printer. Sad to say, this is not a native program but runs as a Java application, and I had never encountered any problems allowing it to through just a sufficient amount of of my PC's firewall software in order to detect it successfully and hook up to the printer. There's no reason for this to be fully web-based; the rest of the printer's software runs locally, so why not this?

The scan-to-pdf application that I installed worked without any problems. I arranged where I desired the files to show up on my computer, scanned them by using the Lexmark Pinnacle PRO901, and they arrived a moment after.

As a copier, it worked just fine, even in colour mode. The auto-feeder was a bit fastidious, given that it won't accept sheets that are not properly placed, and not totally flat, prompting you to refresh it again and again until it finally accepts the papers. I got inconsistent results with the scanner, in which it was not able to detect the leading edge of documents thus graphics ranning up to the hilt of the edges. There are times that it would work, and other times wherein it will just cut off the first half-inch on its duplicate.

The results of the double-sided printing looked outstanding, while the double-sided scanning was a bit disappointing.. You'll have to remove the sheet from the output tray, properly position it, and then re-insert it to be scanned once again. In case you experienced difficulties getting the auto-feeder to sense the high-quality sheet the first time through, expect the exact same things for the second go-round. In the long run, it will work, but you need to manually scan each page twice, helping to make double-sided scanning more of a software hack rather than a hardware solution.

The large capacitive touchscreen is perfectly designed. Lexmark is smart enough to include a cleaning cloth as the screen can easily pick up a good amount of smudges. The onscreen touch keyboard functions well enough, and the screen's quality is really showcased with the quantity of transition as well as the background animated sequences.. The only thing that takes away from it is that it is actually set at a set position, well suited for interacting with it when placed upon a table. Since I like to keep my printers on a shelf just below my desk, I found myself having to kneel down just to be able to read the display.

Inkjet printers have come a long way in the past 20 years. Lexmark is a strong performer in terms of printing and basic scanning. Exactly what divides this product from other all-in-ones will be just how the special features work. Double-sided printing is a win. Double-sided scanning, less so. The auto-feeder is obstreperous, however deals with text well, yet it can sometimes have difficulties with full-page graphics.

Who is this printer for, then? The stand-alone document features are the most interesting, especially for someone who has a laptop as a primary computer. If you leave your laptop at work or on campus, you can still scan pages and email them to yourself, or upload pictures to Picassa. In a pinch, there are newsreader applets that can deliver recent headlines. If you don't want to bother with a desktop computer, this might be the most valuable addition to your home office.
