The most recent in a long line of specialist photo printers, the PX710W makes use of Epson's most recent generation of 'hummingbird' Claria dye based inks, and there are six separately replaceable cartridges in the conventional photo-friendly line-up of cyan, magenta, yellow and black, as well as light cyan and light magenta, meaning to extend the colour range to get better photographic consistency. All six of the PX710W's inks are dye-based, allowing a high quality finish upon glossy photo papers. With the absence of a pigment-based black ink, or even a resin-based DuraBrite black ink the creation of high-quality mono text can be a challenge for the PX710W. However black text is still fairly sharp, suffering much less from a faint greyish affair than with a number of Epson's earlier photo printers, making it much more practical as an all-rounder. Mono text pages are fairly inexpensive to produce as well, regardless of the absence of a high-capacity mono cartridge.
However, there is unquestionably no deficiency of connection choices, the PX710W featuring both Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi, together with USB 2.0, PictBridge along with a broad selection of media card slots.
Epson's standard 5760 x 1440dpi print engine is packaged with a high-resolution 2400 x 4800dpi scanner equipped with standalone capabilities such as photocopying and direct printing from memory cards being brought together by way of a, frankly, enormous control panel. It lacks the more daring touchscreen option offered by some however the 6.3cm colour Liquid crystal display is vivid as well as clear, plus the wide variety of buttons sprouting from the front panel makes things pretty instinctive.
Changing between plain and photo paper is a little bit of a chore and, whilst there exists a second input tray, this can only support small-format photo paper as opposed to full A4 sheets. Automatic double-sided printing is furthermore off the menu, unless you purchase Epson's optionally available Auto Duplex unit.
Picture print speed is very fast with normal quality photo option, with 6 x 4-inch prints taking close to 20 seconds to make.
Earlier Epson designs such as the Stylus Photo P50 basic printer as well as the PX650 all-in-one were well known for their tardiness in top quality photo print modes, making you wait for around five minutes whilst they delivered up a borderless A4 print. The PX710W proved substantially swifter in the tests, at just below three minutes.
The bottom line for any dedicated photo printer is the precise quality of photograph prints. The PX710W is a little bit of a mixed bag in this regard, because while photos are usually very bright as well as lively, contrast can be artificially high and a number of of our test photographs lost fine detail in shadowy regions of scenes as a result. At the same time, skin tones can be a little on the cool side while using the Epson Stylus Photo PX710W ink cartridges.
The PX710W is among Epson's best photo printers to date but speed as well as quality could be superior.
