Canon Pixma iP2702 printer ink cartridges

If you are looking for a cheap printer then you may be interested in the Canon PIXMA iP2702 which is available for about £45. Undoubtedly this printer is aimed at users who only print occasionally.

The iP2702 proved to be easy to get up and running. The build quality did not feel that great but it looks OK in an unfussy sort of way. The paper tray at the back of the printer will take as many as 100 pages of A4. It will be necessary to place the printer on a surface that has some space in front of it because there is no tray to hold your printed work. On the top right of the printer are two control buttons, with LED indicators, for power and for paper feed and error control.

The back of the printer has sockets to connect the mains lead and a USB cable, you cannot use this machine in a wireless network.

The Canon PIXMA iP2702 ink cartridges are accessed by raising it's hinged cover. When you do so the head carrier slides into a convenient position. The black cartridge supplied is the PG-510 which contains 9ml of ink and the colour cartridge is the CL-511 which has 9ml of ink. These can be replaced by the better value PG-512 with 15ml of ink and CL-513 which contains 13 ml of ink.

Software provided with the iP2702 Includes Canon's Easy-PhotoPrint EX and Easy-WebPrint EX. There is also a copy of the user manual included on the software disc. The Easy-PhotoPrint EX software is easy to use and will let you edit and enhance photos amongst other things. You can use Easy-WebPrint EX to print excerpts from Web pages according to your own specifications.

Printing speeds for the Canon PIXMA iP2702 were less than spectacular but no worse than other printers in the same price bracket. In tests the iP2702 printed a 20 page mono document in less than four minutes and a 10 page colour document took only slightly longer.

Prints from the Canon PIXMA iP2702 varied in quality depending upon what you were printing. Text was very satisfying and was dark and easy to read. Graphics were easy to read but the colour was disappointingly washed out and dull. The printer really fell down when it came to photos. These were dull and slightly foggy.

The Canon PIXMA iP2702 may be worth considering depending on what you are looking for. At £45 it is undeniably cheap, it is simple to work with, is not very large, produces very good mono prints and has some decent software. However it is also expensive to run because of the colour cartridge, is not very good at colour printing and gives the impression of not being that well built.
