Canon PIXMA MP640 Review

If you are looking for a printer/scanner/copier then Canon's £150 PIXMA MP640 should definitely be on your list. It is WiFi compatible, has a colour screen, and a built-in duplex unit.

The MP640's control panel is situated on the scanner lid. A fold-down flap keeps this safe when it is not being used and the monitor is also housed in it. Some careful thought has gone into the design of the control panel which has easy-to-use buttons, including two that can be used for programming, and a click-wheel for navigating the menu.

The flatbed scanner is located beneath the lid and this raises to let you get to the printer cartridges. As is becoming more common these days the five Canon PIXMA MP640 ink cartridges include two black (the PGI-520BK and the CLI-521BK), a pigmented one for printing text and a dye-based one for photos and three colours (CLI-521C, CLI-521M and CLI-521Y). The Canon PIXMA MP640 has facilities for CompactFlash, SD, MemoryStick, xD and USB in a covered housing at the front right of the machine.

There are two 150-sheet paper trays offering versatile paper handling. One is a cassette located at the bottom of the MP640 and the other is at the back. Both can be used for printing a variety of media. You also have the option to print on Cd's and DVDs using a facility which is is accessed by pulling down an internal cover.

You get a comprehensive selection of software with the Canon PIXMA MP640 together with drivers for Windows and Apple operating systems.

Connection the printer to a wireless network was simple and quick. You first log onto the network using either WPA or WPS and then the software installation picks up the printer.

Copies of photos and documents from the Canon PIXMA MP640 were excellent. Both black and white and colour documents were sharp and clear and the colours were accurate. Photos were reproduced with similarly impressive results. Skin tones and other colours were spot on.

Printing with the Canon PIXMA MP640 produced equally impressive results. Black and white text was well defined and colour graphics stood out from the page beautifully. Printing speeds were also impressive, taking about 13 seconds to print a document. If you use the duplex unit the speed is reduced to roughly 3.5 pages a minute.

Scans from the MP640 were also of excellent quality. Perhaps the only negative point is the fact that there is no facility for scanning film.

The Canon PIXMA MP640 comes highly recommended. It produces great quality prints, scans and copies, is easy to use and has WiFi and duplex capabilities.
