Most HP inkjet printers require only two ink cartridges, one containing black ink and a tri-colour cartridge containing Cyan, Magenta and Yellow ink. HP have a clear method of identifying cartridges numerically making replacing cartridges easier, e.g. an HP Deskjet D4360 will come supplied with an HP350 black cartridge and an HP351 tri-colour cartridge, however when ordering replacement cartridges it is cheaper in the long run to order the XL version of the cartridge if one is available. Although the outlay will be greater initially, it will yield a lower cost per page printed over the life of the cartridge, so in this example we would recommend ordering the HP350XL and the HP351XL as replacements, they will last up to 5 times as long and cost only marginally more.

HP mono laser printers require only one cartridge to be replaced and this cartridge contains both toner and a new OPC making sure that print quality is maintained throughout the life of the cartridge. Just like HP ink cartridges some HP toner cartridges are available in two volumes, e.g. an HP Laserjet P2015 comes with an HPQ7553a cartridge which is rated at 3,000 prints but you would be better replacing this with an HPQ7553X cartridge when the time comes to replace your toner as this cartridge is rated at 7,000 pages.
